An atlas of mosses found in Shanghai called City Moss, this project examines the important impact mosses have on people and the environment, and the problems they face today in urban envrionments as their presence is declining dramatically due to urban development, while at the same time ecological resotration and soil improvement are improving their abundance.

I designed this atlas by collecting common mosses in Shanghai and cataloging basic information about them and their growing environments. In the book I also incorporated an experimental physical font made used cotton and flock to mimic the form and texuture of mosses, giving the reader a more tangible and tactile feel for mosses.

City Moss is an atlas cataloging mosses common to Shanghai.
Real moss samples collected from the city of Shanghai, which were used as reference for the physical typography.
As part of the book design I created an experimental physical font, made used cotton and flock to mimic the form and texuture of mosses.
Detail of spreads from the book, which examine mosses’ ecological  impact and the challenges they face in urban settings.
The book uses a ‘dragon scale’ binding that allows the reader to fan out the pages and quickly browse through the index of mosses.
The goal of this atlas is to give the readers a more tangible feel for mosses and an appreciation for their presence in the environment.
